The HOT weather is definitely here!

Which means we normally trade in the heavy weighted yarn for something more light and airy to crochet with.

Browsing through my yarn stash, I found some left over colorful cotton and acrylic yarn blends.

Such nice bright colors to work with!

I had to turn them into something quick and easy.

The kitchen could always use another dishcloth. Especially bright and bold ones!

This colorful dishcloth pattern reminds me of waves in the ocean.

Blue waves (not purple, orange or yellow ones).

You can to make it wavy, by only crocheting a boarder on two sides.

Or it can be finished off with a boarder on all four sides creating a square dishcloth.

EASY OPTION **** If you only crochet the 2 boarder option, the entire dishcloth is made up of ONLY single crochet stitches!

Whatever option you prefer – make it your own and have fun doing it!

To crochet this colorful chevron dishcloth the materials and pattern notes are listed below.

Dimensions: 8″ x 7 1/2″ with 2 sided boarder. 8″ x 8″ with 4 sided boarder

NOTES:

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • ch 1 does not counts as a stitch.
  • There is a sc increase (2 sc in the next st) in the first and last st of every row.
  • For every sc decrease in the pattern, there is a sc increase (final row counts are always 36).
  • I carried the different colors of yarn up the side because it will be hidden with the sc boarder.
  • Every 2 rows I changed color. Rows 1 & 2 are with the MC and 3 & 4 are with CC. Rows 4 & 5 are with MC and 6 & 7 are with CC and so on.

Lets Get Started!

The picture below shows the individual stitches in the chevron pattern (if you are more of a visual learner).
The written instructions are below.

ROW 1: With main color (MC) ch 36. Try not to make these chains too tight, as you will have to crochet into them for the boarder side 3 (if you are making the square dishcloth option).

Place 2 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. *sc in the next 3 st, sc2tog, sc2tog, sc in the next 3 st, 2 sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st * Repeat from * to * one more time. sc in the next 3 st, sc2tog, sc2tog, sc in the next 3 st, 2 sc in the last st. ch 1 and turn. (36)

ROW 2: *2 sc in the first st, sc in the next 3 st, sc2tog, sc2tog, sc in the next 3 st, 2 sc in the next st * Repeat from * to * across (36)

ROW 3: With contrasting color (CC) ch 1 and turn. *2 sc in the first st, sc in the next 3 st, sc2tog, sc2tog, sc in the next 3 st, 2 sc in the next st * Repeat from * to * across. Ch 1 and turn. (36)

ROW 4: *2 sc in the first st, sc in the next 3 st, sc2tog, sc2tog, sc in the next 3 st, 2 sc in the next st* Repeat from * to * across. (36)

NOTES:

I carry the colors up the side of the dishcloth when I change color every 2nd row (detailed steps below).

Step 1: Crochet in your main color (this one is white) until the final step of the last stitch before you want to change color (in this case we are changing color at the end of the row).
The last stitch is a sc.
Start the sc like normal, when you yo the second time and pull through to finish the sc use the other color yarn (in this case purple).

This pattern is alternating colors every 2nd row and you will be changing colors on the same side.

This allows you to carry the other color (from 2 rows below) up the side and start crocheting with it.

Step 2: Once you have completed the sc with the new color make sure you don’t pull the new color yarn too tight.
You want the yarn at the side to be slightly taller than the previous two rows below.
Continue to crochet as the pattern states with the new color.

ROW 5: With MC ch 1 and turn. *2 sc in first st, sc in the next 3 st, sc2tog, sc2tog, sc in the next 3 st, 2 sc in the next st* Repeat from * to * across. ch 1 and turn. (36)

ROW 6: *2 sc in the first st, sc in the next 3 st, sc2tog, sc2tog, sc in the next 3 st, 2 sc in the next st* Repeat from * to * across. (36)

ROWS 7-26: Repeat rows 3 – 6 six more times. Do not cut yarn.
It is now time to add the boarder!

To make the dishcloth with a boarder on 2 sides ONLY:

With MC from row 26, ch 1 and rotate your work counter clockwise to start the sc boarder down the side of the dishcloth.

Place 1 sc in the end of each row going down the side of the dishcloth. (26) Cut yarn and weave in end.

Rotate your work counter clockwise again to start the boarder on the opposite side.
With MC ch 1 and sc in the end of each row going up the side of the dishcloth. (26). Cut yarn and weave in end.

You have just finished your dishcloth!
How many more will you make in other colors?

To make a square dishcloth with a boarder on all 4 sides:

NOTE: There is a photo below which labels each boarder side and stitches on the chevron dishcloth pattern for all you visual learners.

Side 1

Start with Side 1 and continue to rotate your work after crocheting each boarder side.

After your final sc from row 26 ch 1 and turn. ss *sc, hdc, dc, dc, tr, dc, dc, hdc, sc, ss in next 3 st.* Repeat from * to * one more time. sc, hdc, dc, dc, tr, dc, dc, hdc, sc, ss in next 2 st. (36)

Side 2

Ch 1 and rotate your work clockwise.

Place 1 sc in the end of each row across. The last sc will be in the chain from the first row (26).

Side 3

NOTE: For side 3 you will be crocheting into the ch st from row 1.

Ch 4 and rotate work clockwise. Tr in the same st, dc, dc, hdc, sc, ss, ss *sc, hdc, dc, dc, tr, dc, dc, hdc, sc, ss in the next 3 st * Repeat from * to * one more time. sc, hdc, dc, dc, tr. (36)

Side 4

NOTE: When making side 4, sc around the strands of yarn that you carried up the side.

Ch 1 and rotate your work clockwise. Place 2 sc around the tr you just worked in the previous boarder row. 1 sc in the end of each row for the next 26 st. 1 sc in in the last sc of row 26 and ss to the 1st ss from side 1. (29) Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Congratulations! You have finished your chevron dishcloth.
