Calming Chevron Baby Blanket – A Free Crochet Pattern

I had the opportunity to make this Chevron Baby Blanket for a special someone’s arrival at the end of September.

I love when a new bundle of joy is about to arrive.
For me, this usually means I can make a thoughtful handmade gift that can be enjoyed for years to come.

I really enjoy the chevron pattern and had fun making this blanket.

NOTES:

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • ch 1 and ch 3 counts as a stitch.
  • There is an increase (2 sc/dc in the next st) in the first and last st of every row. (See photo of stitch repeat below)
  • For every decrease (sc2tog or dc2tog) in the pattern row, there is a corresponding increase (2 sc in next st. or 2 dc in next st.)
(final row counts are always 108).
  • This chevron pattern alternates 2 rows of sc (white) and 2 rows of dc (pink).
  • You will need more of the MC that you work the 2 rows of dc in.
  • I carried the different colors of yarn up the side because it will be hidden with the sc boarder.
  • I chose pink and white to match the decor, but any color combination would look great!

Dimensions: Approx. 40” X 23”

Gauge: 14 sc and 8 rows = 4” in chevron pattern (alternating 2 rows sc and 2 rows dc)

Find out all about gauge including how to measure it and more with a detailed photo tutorial to walk you though it.

The chevron stitch repeat used in the chevron baby blanket.
When working a dc row (MC), make sure to increase and decrease with dc.
When working a sc row (CC), make sure to increase and decrease with sc.

Border:

Note: The boarder is only crocheted on 2 sides of the blanket.
The chevron pattern at the top and bottom of the blanket does not have a boarder.

The boarder will start at the beginning of the last row you just completed (Row 78).

Row 1: With CC (white) rotate your work so that your first st will be in the end of the final row you just completed (Row 78).

Ch 1 and sc evenly down the side of the blanket. Cut yarn and weave in ends. (116) (See note below)

NOTE: I placed 1 sc in the end of each sc row and 2 sc in the end of each of each dc row. (see photo below)

How to crochet the boarder of the blanket. Place 1 sc in the end of each sc row and 2 sc in the end of each dc row.

Row 2: Rotate your work clockwise (I say this because I crochet with my right hand) to begin the boarder on the opposite side. Ch 1 and place 1 sc in the end of the very first row of the blanket. Sc evenly across the other side of the blanket (same as row 1 of boarder) (116) Cut yarn and weave in ends.
