NOTES:

  • This pattern is written in US terms
  • ch 1 and ch 2 does not count as a stitch
  • I used yarn that I had left over in my stash, the red was a bit thicker than the white and blue.
  • I used the bigger J/6mm hook* for the red stars and the smaller G/4.5 hook for the white and blue stars and backing.
  • It is important to use the proper hook size for the yarn you choose.
  • I went for a walk in the park and found a stick to tie the wall hanging to.

There is a written description with photos below on how to tie the fringe on the bottom.

You will need for the finished free crochet wall hanging:

3 stars (color of your choice), 1 backing, 1 stick and extra yarn for fringe.

Make sure you lay out your pieces of the wall hanging before sewing them on.
I used Red and White to make a Canada Day wall hanging.

To make the backing:

Row 1: With white and G/ 4.5mm hook ch 60, sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each ch across. (59) ch 2 and turn.

Row 2: dc in each st across, ch 1 and turn. (59)

Row 3: sc in each st across, ch 2 and turn. (59)

Rows 4-11: Repeat rows 2 and 3. Cut a long enough tail to be able to wrap around the stick, backing and make a triangle at the top to hang.
I doubled it up using 2 strands. The piece I cut was approx. 100″ and I folded it in half (50″)

To make the star (make 3)

Crochet Stars that will be added later to the wall hanging pattern.

Note: Use the proper sized hook for the yarn. I used a J/6mm hook for the red flower because the yarn was thicker than the white and blue.
See photo below for detailed stitch rounds.

Round 1: using ML method 5 sc into loop. SS into first st. and ch 1. (5)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. SS to first st and ch 1. (10)
Round 3: 2 sc in each st around. SS to first st and ch 1. (20)
Round 4: * 1sc, 1hdc, 1dc, 1tr, ch3, ss to same st as the tr * repeat from * to * around. (5 points) (20) Leave a long tail to sew star to backing and cut yarn.

FINISHING:

Place the 3 stars on the backing. I pined them in place and held the backing up to decide if I liked the placement before sewing them on.

When you are happy with the placement of the stars, using the long tail from each finished star sew in place on the backing.

To make fringe:

There are 11 rows on the backing.
Turn the backing vertically and place 1 fringe through the end of each row. (11 total). See photos below.

Each fringe is 30″ long. Cut 11 of these pieces (whichever color your prefer) I folded each of these pieces in half to create two strands (15″ each).

How to add the fringe to the crochet pattern
Thread a needle with the folded 2 strands.
How to add the fringe to the crochet pattern
With the right side of the backing facing you, thread the needle through the end of the first row going through the right side of backing and coming out the wrong side.
How to add the fringe to the crochet pattern
Take the needle off the folded yarn and wrap the tail ends of the strands through the loop that was just on the needle. Pull tight to secure the fringe.

Repeat this at the end of each row of the backing changing color if desired.

Attach wall hanging to stick:

Take that extra long tail from the end of the backing and fold it in half (2 strands). Thread the folded strands through a needle, secure the final st from the final row of the backing and attach.

Wrap the yarn around the stick and through the wrong side of the backing into the end of the first sc row.
I then wrapped the yarn around the stick twice before I went through the wrong side of the backing and into the next end of a sc row.
I repeated this 4 more times.
After you bring the yarn through the final sc row of the backing wrap it around the stick 2 more times.
Bring the yarn up creating a large triangle to hang the piece on and wrap the yarn around the other end of the stick twice and secure with a knot.

Trim the ends of the fringe and you have finished the patriotic crochet wall hanging.
