Autumn Crunch Beanie – A Free Crochet Pattern

The Autumn Crunch Beanie Pattern is here! This is the very first set I have designed and I am very excited to share it with you!

I actually designed the Autumn Crunch Cowl for myself with my favorite neutral colors. Yes, neutral colors can be boring, but they pair well with almost anything! I had so much fun using the wattle stitch for this cowl that I made a pair of fingerless gloves to match, and now a beanie!

Stacy @stacysecoy made a messy bun hat using Red Heart With Love in the color Beachy. When you get to the top of the beanie, gather the top together, just leave a big enough opening for the bun!

She also made the beanie using Red Heart Super Saver Thyme and Frosty Green.

ABBREVIATIONS:

If you are unfamiliar with any of the stitches used in this pattern, check out the basic crochet stitches page with a step by step picture tutorial for each stitch on the Basic Crochet Stitches page.

ch – chain
st – stitch
sk – skip
ss – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
blo – single crochet through the back loop only

MATERIALS:

H/5mm hook
I used stash yarn for this cowl. You will need approx. 225-260 yards total of worsted weight yarn (#4)
darning needle
tape measure
scissors

NOTES:

Read through the entire pattern before you begin.
This pattern is written in US terms.
ch 1 does not count as a stitch
This beanie is made from the bottom up, and continues in the round using the wattle stitch.
I used two colors for this beanie (brown and cream) and dropped the yarn color when not in use.
When crocheting in the round working the wattle stitch, just continue the clusters in each ch space. You are not joining rows.

Sizes: Measurements are of head circumference.
Adult Small – 20″ – 21″ Medium – 21″- 22″ Large – 23″ – 24″

Gauge: Brim: 8 sc (blo) and 8 rows = 2″ Body: 3 clusters and 5 rows = 2″ in the wattle stitch.

** if you are a tight crocheter, you might get a better fit by going up a beanie size or two.

**If you match your gauge with the one in the pattern, your hat will be the size listed above.

A brief description of the wattle stitch:

The wattle stitch consists of a cluster of stitches (sc, ch1, dc) that are made all in the same chain space from the row below.

When making your first row of wattle stitches in this crochet beanie pattern you will skip 2 sc from the previous row in between each cluster.
**** if you are a tight crocheter, you might get a better fit by going up a beanie size or two.

Lets Get Started!

NOTES: To make the beanie smaller or larger the pattern is a multiple of 3 stitches + 1.

BRIM (all sizes)

R1: With brown, ch 9 and sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and across. Ch 1 and turn. (8)
R2: Sc in blo and across, ch 1 and turn. (8)

Repeat R2 for a total of Small (64 rows), Medium (70 rows), Large (73 rows)

Bring the two ends of the brim together, making sure not to twist the brim and sl st across both sets of stitches. Do not cut yarn. (8)

Turn your brim so that the slip stitches are on the inside, and we will start working the beanie body in the round.

Beanie Pattern Body

Round 1: Ch 1, place 1 sc in each row end of the brim around. Do not sl st to the first st. Small (64), Medium (70), Large (73)

Round 2: With cream color, make 1 cluster (sc, ch, dc) in the first st. Skip next 2 st, * cluster in the next st, sk next 2 st.* Repeat from * to * until there is one st left. place 1 cluster in the last st (do not join).
Small (22 clusters), Medium (24 clusters), Large (25 clusters)

Round 3: With brown, place 1 cluster in each ch space around.
Small (22 clusters), Medium (24 clusters), Large (25 clusters)

Round 4: With cream, place 1 cluster in each ch space around.
Small (22 clusters), Medium (24 clusters), Large (25 clusters)

Rounds 5-17: Repeat round 3 and 4. After row 17 your beanie should be approximately 8.5″ tall.

**To make a taller beanie, just continue rounds 3 and 4 until desired height.

Finishing

After finishing your final round of clusters, cut a long tail. Thread the tail through a tapestry needle, gather the top together through the ch 1 spaces of the previous round and pull tight. Cut yarn and weave in ends. Add a pom pom if you like!

Note: If you want to make a messy bun hat, just don’t pull the tail as tight, leaving a big enough hole for the bun to fit through!
