Coastal Wave Runner – Free Crochet Pattern

Coastal Wave Runner - Free Crochet Pattern

I am so excited for the weather to warm up and be able to enjoy some summer sunshine!
The Coastal Wave Runner reminds me of waves in the ocean, and I can’t wait to share this pattern with you!
I loved using the wave stitch in the Coastal Waves Coaster so much that I decided to make a runner.

Let’s keep in touch!

You can find me on Instagram, facebook, Ravelry and Pinterest!

ABBREVIATIONS:

  • ch – chain
  • st – stitch
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet

MATERIALS:

  • G-6/4mm hook
  • H/5mm hook
  • Approx. 125 yard of ww (#4) yarn. I used stash yarn (cotton) for the blue and Bernat Handicrafter – Lemon Swirl for the surface crochet
  • Darning needle
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors

NOTES:

  • This is an advanced beginner pattern.
  • Read through the entire pattern before you begin.
  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • Ch 1 and 3 does not count as a stitch.
  • If you are a tight crocheter, I recommend using a larger hook size (H/5mm) for the surface crochet.
  • When adding the surface crochet (waves), the slip stitches will pull the piece in and make it a bit smaller than without the surface crochet.
  • A close alternative to the blue yarn I used is Bernat Handicrafter – Blueberry.
  • If you are using Bernat Handicrafter Cotton, you will need 2 small balls (1.5oz/42.5g) of your main color and 1 small ball for the “waves” for this project.

Dimensions: Approx. 23″ x 7″ without surface crochet. Approx. 21″ x 7.5″ with surface crochet (finished runner)

Gauge: 7 st and 4 rows = 2″ in the wave stitch (without surface crochet).

**If you want to learn more about gauge with a detailed photo tutorial to walk you though it, check out the All about Gauge Page.

I could not have brought the Coastal Wave Runner to life without the help of my fabulous testing team! Check out all their color combinations below!

Lets Get Started!

If you would like to learn how to crochet the waves stitch, I have a step by step photo tutorial you can view HERE.

To learn how to crochet any of the stitches used in this pattern there is a step by step photo tutorial on The Basic Crochet Stitches Page.

If you wanted to make a smaller version of the Coastal Wave Runner, you can view the Coastal Waves Coaster pattern (pictured below) HERE. Just make sure to add the surface crochet!

You can make a coaster sized version of the Coastal Wave Runner using the Coastal Waves Coaster pattern that is also on my blog.

Surface Crochet

The Coaster Wave Runner on a table with some fruit. Free Crochet Pattern.

NOTE: When working the surface crochet, turn your work so that the side is facing you and your working yarn is behind the runner. I hold the runner and working yarn in my left hand, and crochet with my right (using the H/5mm hook).

Directions:

  • With H/5mm hook and yellow yarn, pull up a loop from behind the runner, through the top of the first st of row 1 and sl st in the second st of row 1 and continue across.
  • Sl st in the top of each st from row 1 across making sure you are following the wave pattern.
  • When you finish your last sl st of row 1, sl st between the tr and turning ch of row 2, then sl st around the turning ch.
  • When you get to the other side, sl st into the first st of the next row and continue across.
  • Continue creating this wave pattern across each row until you get to row 14. Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Option: You can also add some fringe to the ends, like some of my testers did, using the same yarn you used for the waves.
