Let’s get started!

What is the moss stitch?

The moss stitch is a very easy pattern that uses chains and single crochet stitches. The single crochet stitches are worked in the chain spaces from the previous row. Once you complete the first row of the pattern, the moss stitch is an easy one row repeat that includes *ch 1, sk, sc in ch sp* and repeat from * to * (See photo below)

For this tutorial, R1, I started with 18 chains.
To start the moss stitch, chain a multiple of 2 (any even number).
The moss stitch is a one row repeat. I used three colors, blue, cream and brown for this tutorial.

For the first row R1, I chained 18 for this tutorial, place your first sc in the 2nd chain from the hook, *ch 1, sk the next chain, sc in the next ch* and continue from * to * across Turn. (17 stitches)

I changed to brown yarn for row 2, so that you can see the stitches easier.
You can continue in the same color if you like.

For R2: ch 1(counts as a stitch), sc in the ch sp from the previous row, *ch 1, sk, sc in ch sp from the previous row* and repeat from * to * across. Place your last sc in the turning ch from the previous row. Turn. (17 stitches)

The last sc of the row goes into the turning ch from the previous row

To continue this stitch, repeat R2 as many times as you would like!

That’s it, an easy one row repeat!

What else can you make using this stitch?

This stitch works great for almost any pattern! I love this stitch for a beautiful baby blanket, an easy scarf or a poncho! If you are looking for something smaller, try a dishcloth for the kitchen, or a dish towel, using cotton.

I hope this stitch tutorial was informative and you learned something new.
