ASSEMBLY
NOTE: The legs, tail and head will be attached to the bottom of the shell before you sew the shell closed. (see photo below for placement.)
Lay the bottom of the shell on a flat surface (wrong side facing towards you.) **Sew the pieces of the turtle onto the wrong side of the shell bottom. This is so you hide the seams when you sew the top and bottom pieces of the shell together.
If you look at the bottom of the shell as a pie you have 41 st around the pie.
Cut in half, one half will have 20 stitches and the other will have 21 stitches.
When divided into quarters, there will be 3 quarters with 10 stitches and the 4th quarter will have 11 stitches. (I placed 4 stitch markers around the bottom shell for placement.)
Place the middle of the tail on top of the last stitch of the bottom shell and sew it on with the long tail of green. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
Place the middle of the head around the 20th stitch of the bottom shell and sew it on with the long tail of green. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
Using the stitch markers as guides, place each leg in the middle of each quarter of the bottom shell (marked by stitch markers).
Sew each leg onto the bottom of the shell with the long tail of green. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
Line up the last stitch of the top shell with the last stitch of the bottom shell and sew the pieces together with the long tail from the top shell. Add stuffing to the shell as you work your way around the shell. Cut yarn and weave in ends.
EYES
I used 2 round domed black buttons I found at the fabric store that were 9mm/ 3/8″ for the eyes.
Place the turtle facing towards you (just the like the pictures above and below) to sew on the eyes.
Thread a needle with green yarn (and a long tail) through the button and place the button between the 5th and 6th row of the head on the right side.
I used yellow yarn for tutorial purposes.
With the same thread and needle come out through the left side of the head (4 stitches from the other button) where you want to place the other button.
Thread the needle through the second button (the left eye that is facing you) and back through the same hole in the head and out through a hole in the bottom of the head.
Thread the long tail of the yarn from the first button (on the right side that is facing you) through the needle and back through the same hole in the head and through the hole in the bottom of the head (same hole the other string came out).
Pull both pieces of yarn tight enough to hide the bottom of the buttons inside the head and tie a double knot (on the underside of the head). Cut the ends and with sharp scissors push the knot inside the head to hide it.
