I couldn’t have brought this pattern to life without my lovely testers that helped make sure my stitch counts were correct and helped named this cowl (Thank you Peg @pegnolan)
Here are some of their magnificent makes!
Emelie @yarn.thereapy.by.emelie used Big Twist Sincerely in Orange and Big Twist Premium in Gingerbread
Peg @pegnolan used a thicker #5 yarn to make a beautiful stash busting cowl! (pattern included in the printable PDF) She also used Loops & Threads Impeccable in Gold and Cream Tweed below!

ABBREVIATIONS:
Check out the many basic crochet stitches with step by step picture tutorials to guide you through each step on the Basic Crochet Stitches page.
- ch – chain
- fsc – foundation single crochet
- st – stitch
- ss – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- ss – slip stitch
MATERIALS:
- H/5mm hook
- I used stash yarn for this cowl. You will need approx. 240 yards total of worsted weight yarn
- darning needle
- tape measure
- scissors
NOTES:
- Read through the entire pattern before you begin.
- This pattern is written in US terms.
- ch 1 does not count as a stitch
- You are crocheting in the round for this pattern using the wattle stitch.
- I used two colors for this cowl (brown and cream) but it would look great in any color!
- When crocheting in the round working the wattle stitch, just continue the clusters in each ch space. You are not joining rows.
Dimensions: Approx. 17″ x 8″ folded in half. 34″ around.
Gauge: 5 clusters and 10 rows = 4″ in the wattle stitch (sc, ch1, dc)
Find out all about gauge and more with a detailed photo tutorial to walk you though it on the All about Gauge Page.
A brief description of the wattle stitch:
The wattle stitch consists of a cluster of stitches (sc, ch1, dc) that are made all in the same chain space.
When making your first row of wattle stitches in this crochet cowl pattern you will skip 1 sc from the previous row in between each cluster.
I also designed the Autumn Crunch Fingerless Gloves and beanie to match the cowl.
You can find the gloves pattern HERE and the beanie pattern HERE.
Lets Get Started!
Note: If you are using a single color for this crochet cowl pattern just repeat R4 until you reach R20 (the sc border row)
R1: With Brown make 94 fsc and ss to the first st.
Alternatively you can chain 94, ss to the first st, ch 1 and sc in each st around. (94)
R2: Ch 1, sc in each st around. (do not ss to the first st.)(94)
R3: With cream color make 1 cluster (sc, ch 1, dc) in the first st. Skip next st,* place 1 cluster in the next st, skip next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (47 clusters)
R4: With Brown make 1 cluster in each ch 1 space around. (47 clusters)
R5: With Cream color make 1 cluster in each ch 1 space around. (47 clusters)
R6-19: Repeat rounds 4 and 5, or until desired width.
Border:
R20: With brown, place 1 sc in each ch 1 space and dc from previous row. SS to first st. (you skip each sc from previous round) (94)
R21: Ch 1 and Sc in each st around. ss to first st and cut yarn and weave in ends. (94)
