The Brisdale Beanie – A Free Crochet Pattern

I had so much fun designing the Brisdale Scarf, that I knew the Brisdale Beanie would be next! I love working with the hdc stitch and working in the front and back loops creates a nice texture. This is an advanced beginner pattern that would look great in any color!

ABBREVIATIONS:

  • ch – chain
  • st – stitch
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • BLO – back loop only
  • FLO – front loop only
  • dec – decrease (hdc 2 together)

MATERIALS:

  • H/5mm hook
  • 1 ball of Red Heart Unforgettable – Woodlands
  • Darning needle
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors

NOTES:

  • This beanie is an advanced beginner pattern that is written in US terms.
  • Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • The brim of the beanie is worked in rows, the body is worked in continuous rounds from the bottom up. Do not sl st to join rounds.
  • A messy bun option is included below.
  • This pattern works with any yarn and hook. Just make sure you make the brim an even number of rows. (note that yardage and dimensions will be different than below)
  • Worsted weight yarns can vary in thickness, if you match your gauge in the pattern, your beanie will be the same size as listed.

Dimensions: Fits head circumference of approx. 21″ – 22″ and is approx. 8.5″ tall from bottom of brim.

Gauge:
Brim: 8 st x 8 rows = 2″ in sc (blo)
Body: 8 st x 6 rows = 2″ in pattern (rows 2&3)

Lets Get Started!

NOTE: To Adjust the size of this pattern, be sure to start with a chain that is a multiple of 2+1.
This pattern is a 2 row repeat.

BRIM INSTRUCTIONS

R1: Ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. (8)
R2: Ch 1, sc (BLO) across. Turn (8)

R3-70: Repeat R2 (or until your desired length). The brim should measure approx. 16″ un-stretched.

Bring the two ends of the brim together, making sure not to twist the brim and sl st through both stitches across. (8)

Turn your brim so the slip stitches are on the inside of the beanie, to start working the body in the round.

BEANIE BODY

R1: Ch 1, hdc in each row end around. (70)

R2: *hdc (BLO), hdc (FLO)* repeat from * to * around. (70)

R3: Hdc (through both loops) around. (70)

R4-12: Repeat rounds 2 & 3. (Beanie should be approx 6″ from bottom after R12)

NOTE: If you would prefer to add more height to your beanie, continue repeating rounds 2 & 3 ending with round 2. The height of the beanie should be approx 6.5″ from the bottom after R12.

R13: *4 hdc, dec* repeat from * to* around. Hdc in the last st. (59)

R14: *hdc (BLO), hdc (FLO)* repeat from * to * around. (59)

R15: *3 hdc, dec* repeat from * to* around. Hdc in last 4 st. (48)

R16: *hdc (BLO), hdc (FLO)* repeat from * to * around. (48)

R17: *2 hdc, dec* repeat from * to* around. (36)

R18: *hdc (BLO), hdc (FLO)* repeat from * to * around. (36)

Messy Bun Option: Hdc around and wave in ends!

R19: *hdc, dec* repeat from * to * around. (24)

R20: Leaving a long tail, cut yarn and weave through each st around, pull tight to close. Cut yarn and weave in ends. Optional, add a pompom.

****A Few notes on how to easily customize your beanie…

To change the HEIGHT of the brim:

SHORTER – decrease the number of stitches
TALLER – increase the number of stitches.

To change the circumference of the Beanie:

Smaller head – decrease rows for brim
Larger head – increase rows for brim
