The Ridgeline Beanie – A Free Crochet Pattern

Green and grey winter crochet hat pattern.

The Ridgeline Beanie has been one of my favorite designs so far. It’s an easy stitch to work with only a one round repeat. This bottom up beanie works up quickly in a solid color or multiple colors.

  • I/5.5mm hook
  • 1 ball of Red Heart Super Saver Ombre (Deep Teal)
  • Small amount of grey for brim OR
Approx. 180 yards of ww (#4) yarn
  • Darning needle
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors
  • Stitch marker
  • Pom pom (optional)

NOTES:

  • Read through the entire pattern before you begin.
  • The Ridgeline Beanie is an advanced beginner pattern that is written in US terms.
  • Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • This pattern is worked in the round, from the bottom up and turned each round using the invisible join method (described below).
  • You can use any size yarn and hook for this pattern, just note that the yardage and dimensions will be different than stated.
  • Due to the nature of this stitch pattern, it is important not to make the sl st(s) too tight. If you are a tight crocheter, I would suggest going up a hook size for a looser fit.

Dimensions: Fits head circumference of approx. 21″ – 22″ and is approx. 8″ tall from bottom of brim.

Gauge: 7 st and 9 rows = 2″ in pattern.

Pattern Inspiration:

The very first pattern I designed using this stitch was the Ridgeline Pumpkin, a fun decoration to make for fall or Halloween. I love the texture that is created by alternating half double crochet and slip stitches. One day I was experimenting with stitches and just love how this pattern looks when alternating colors.

The Ridgeline Skinny Scarf, Mug Cozy and Mug Rug are also fee patterns on the blog. To view these patterns click on the photos below. This stitch works well with so many projects!

Lets Get Started!

NOTE: To adjust the size of this pattern, be sure to start with a multiple of 2 rows for the brim of the beanie. If you adjust the size of the pattern, the amount of yarn will be different than listed above.

BRIM

Row 1: With brim color, ch 7, sc in second ch from hook, 4 sc in BLO, sc. Turn (6)

Row 2: ch 1, sc, 4 sc in BLO, sc. Turn. (6)

Rows 3-68: Repeat row 2 (or until desired width). The brim should measure approx. 20″ slightly stretched. Do not cut yarn.

Bring the two ends of the brim together, making sure not to twist the brim and sl st though both stitches across (6)

Turn your brim so the sl st(s) are on the inside. Start working the beanie body in the round.
