Surface Crochet

Adding orange surface crochet (slip stitches) to the black mug rug to create the waves on top.

With orange and a long tail, add a row of surface crochet (sl st) through the tops of the stitches of row 1. Cut yarn (leaving a tail on each side for the fringe. ) Continue doing this for rows 3, 5, 7 and 9.

Let’s add some fringe!

Cut 30 pieces of black yarn that are approx. 6″

Cut 10 pieces of orange yarn that are approx. 6″

Turn your Halloween mug rug to attach the fringe up the sides. Fold a piece of yarn in half and pull through from the bottom with your crochet hook around the last stitch of the row, yo with the two ends and pull through the loop to secure the fringe. I added 3 black fringe around each tr(or ch 3) and 1 orange fringe around each sc. Once all your fringe is added, I combed them out to make them neat and trimmed the edges approx. 1.5″ NOTE: I kept the left over orange tails from the surface crochet and added it to the fringe.
