Pattern Construction:

This Pretty Pink & Purple Purse was designed with my friend in mind.
Her favorite colors with a basic design made a great gift!

This free crochet pooling purse pattern is made up of 2 pieces. The body and strap.
The body is crocheted in the round with double crochet pooling the colors on top of each other in each row.

This yarn is a chunky weight (6), however I used a smaller hook to get the desired look.

I also made sure to crochet according to the color of the stitches, altering my tension at times, in order to create the striped look.

Don’t worry, it’s not that hard, because I have a picture tutorial below.

I really love how the purse turned out and I hope you will as well!

Lets get started!

Just a note on color pooling: As I stated above I made sure the colors of each dc stitch stacked on top of the same colors in the previous row. I will show an example later in the pattern.
NOTE: This pattern uses US terms.

R1: To begin ch more than you need. The pattern is 53 dc around. I would ch 70 or more, to be able to have a tail to crochet or sew the bottom up with. You won’t use all the chains, just make enough so you can dc enough stitches to continue the color sequence in the round.

NOTE: Your final dc in Row 1 needs to continue with the color pattern in the yarn from your first dc because we are working in the round.

We want the colors to stack on top of each other.

NOTE: ch 3 DOES NOT count as a stitch

R2: dc in 4th ch from hook and in every ch across and ss to top of the first dc (53)

Use a stitch marker to mark the first dc of the round.

If you have a few more or less than 53 dc that is OK, as long as the color sequence continues in the round. Just make a note that your stitch count will be different than listed in the pattern.
It is likely that you might need more yarn because more stitches would alter the size slightly.

In the smaller sample below I dc in each ch across

R3: Once you ss into the first dc of the round, ch 3 and dc in each st across. (53)
Make sure the color of each dc are the same color from the previous row. (See photos below)

Round 4: Repeat round 3 ten more times for a total of 12 rows. (see notes below). Fasten Off.

NOTES:

  • On your final row (ROW 12) the last 2 stitches should be a hdc and a sc in order to make the row level with the previous one.
  • If you want to be cautious and have more yarn left over than less, you could shorten the purse making it only 11 rows high and make the strap longer.
  • You could also make the strap thinner making it 3 or 4 dc wide instead of 5, as the pattern states.

The pictures below show an example of how you can change your tension to be able to stack the colors properly.
In the first two pictures you can see that I will not have enough of the purple to complete the 4th dc.
I go back a few stitches and tighten up my tension, in order get the 4th dc to stack the colors.

STRAP:

NOTE: ch 3 DOES NOT count as a stitch
R1: ch 9, dc in the 4th ch from hook and across row and turn (5)
R2: ch 3*, dc across (5)
R3: Repeat Row 2 until the strap measures 36″. Fasten off with long tail to sew to bag
* If you prefer you can use a standing dc instead of a ch 3

FINISHING:

Slip stitch the bottom of the purse together with the tail of extra ch stitches made at the beginning.
If you don’t have enough of a tail, just use a new piece of yarn.
you could also sew the bottom together. It’s your choice.
Pin the ends of the straps to the top of the purse and sew in place.
Sew in ends and you have finished!
