The Maisie Market Bag – A Free Crochet Pattern

Hello Summer! I am so excited the weather has warmed up enough to visit farmer’s markets. I am so excited to share with you the Maisie Market Bag! This bag works up pretty quick with a 2 row repeat and looks great in so many colors.

ABBREVIATIONS:

  • ch – chain
  • st – stitch
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sk – skip (stitches)
  • sc – single crochet
  • inc – increase (2 sc in same st)
  • cluster – sc, ch 1, dc in same st
  • MC – main color
  • CC – contrasting colors
  • ch sp – chain space

MATERIALS:

  • H/5mm hook
  • Approx. 445yards of ww (#4) yarn
  • 320 yards of Bernat Handicrafter Cotton – Bright Purple
  • 125 yards of Bernat Handicrafter Cotton – Robins Egg
  • Darning needle
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors
  • Stitch Marker

NOTES:

  • This is an advanced beginner pattern.
  • Read through the entire pattern before you begin.
  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • Ch 1 and 2 do not count as a stitch.
  • The base of this pattern is worked in continuous rounds (do not sl st to join rounds) When changing colors use the invisible join method. (see note in pattern)
  • I used two colors and dropped the yarn color when not in use.
  • You can use any size yarn and hook for this pattern, just note that the yardage and dimensions will be different than above.

Dimensions: Approx. 15″ x ″3.5 x 16″ (not including handles)

Gauge: 8 clusters and 9 rows = 4″ in pattern (rows 16 & 17)

NOTE: To make an invisible join when changing colors each round follow steps 1-4
1. Remove hook from last st.
2. Insert hook in first st (or ch sp) of round from BACK to front.
3. Pull loop from last st through first st (or ch sp).
4. Ch 1 with NEW color and continue next row in the same stitch (or ch sp).

BASE

Round 1: With MC, ch 41, sc in second ch from hook and next 38 st, inc in last st of row. Rotate your work and continue working on the other side of the chains. 39 sc (80)

Round 2: Sc, inc, 37 sc, inc, sc, inc, 37 sc, inc. (84)

Round 3: 2 sc, inc, 38 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc, 38 sc, inc. (88)

Round 4: 3 sc, inc, 39 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 39 sc, inc. (92)

Round 5: 4 sc, inc, 40 sc, inc, 4 sc, inc, 40 sc, inc. (96)

Round 6: 5 sc, inc, 41 sc, inc, 5 sc, inc, 41 sc, inc. (100)

Round 7: 6 sc, inc, 42 sc, inc, 6 sc, inc, 42 sc, inc. (104)

Round 8: 7 sc, inc, 43 sc, inc, 7 sc, inc, 43 sc, inc. (108)

Round 9: 8 sc, inc, 44 sc, inc, 8 sc, inc, 44 sc, inc. (112)

Rounds 10 – 14: Ch 1, sc around. Join to first st using the invisible join method described above (112)

NOTE: For the remainder of the pattern, use the invisible join method described above.

Round 15: With CC, ch 1, cluster (sc, ch 1, dc) in first st, sk 1, *cluster, sk 1* repeat from * to * around. Join to first ch sp. (56 clusters)

Round 16: With MC, ch 2, dc in ch sp, ch 1, *dc in ch sp, ch 1* repeat from * to * around. Join to first st. (56 dc, 56 ch)

Round 17: With CC, ch 1, cluster in first dc and each dc around. (56 clusters)

Rounds 18-37: Repeat rounds 16 and 17.

NOTE: If you would like to add more rounds (making your bag taller) before working the handles, repeat rounds 16 and 17 until desired length.
** FO and weave in CC.

Round 38: With MC, ch 1, place 1 sc in each sc and ch sp from previous round. (112)

Rounds 39 -44: Ch 1, sc around. (112)

HANDLES

Round 45: Ch 1, 20 sc, ch 84, sk 34, sc 22, ch 84, sk 34, 2sc. Join to first st. (44 sc, 168 ch)

Round 46: Ch 1, 20 sc, sc in each ch, 22 sc, sc in each ch, 2 sc. Join to first st. (212)

Rounds 47 – 50: Ch 1, sc around. Join to first st. (212)

NOTE: If you would prefer thicker handles, add a few more rounds of sc.

Round 51: Sl st around. (212)

Sl st to first st, FO and weave in ends.
