The Tri-Stripe Tote – A Free Crochet Pattern


The Tri-Stripe Tote is a fun way to dress up any outfit. This is an easy NO SEW crochet pattern that only uses sc. It is crocheted with only a few rectangles and seemed together with slip stitches. I love how quick this bag is to make!

ABBREVIATIONS:

  • ch – chain
  • st – stitch
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet

MATERIALS:

  • H/5mm hook
  • 1 ball of Bernat Premium in each color: Dahlia, Teal, Purple or approximately 370 yards of ww (#4) yarn.
  • Darning needle
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors

NOTES:

Dimensions: Approx. 12″ x 8″ and 4″deep (not including handles)

  • This is an easy crochet pattern.
  • Read through the entire pattern before you begin.
  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • This bag is made with 6 separate rectangles that are sl st together on the outside of the bag.
  • This is a no sew bag. I left long tails from each color block and used these tails to sl st the pieces together at the end. If you prefer, you can use a new piece of yarn to sl st the pieces together.
  • The colors used in this pattern are A – Purple, B – Teal, C – Dahlia.

Gauge: 11 st and 13 rows = 3″ sc

1 – Bottom

With Color A

R1: Leaving an extra-long tail (approx. 40″ for seaming), ch 44, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. (43)
R2-13: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. (43)
Cut yarn leaving a long tail for seaming.

2 & 3 – Front/Back (Make 2)

With color A

R1: Ch 44, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. (43)
R2- 13: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. (43)
Cut yarn leaving an extra-long tail (approx. 50″ for seaming)


Join with color B


R14-26: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. (43)
Cut yarn leaving a long tail for seaming.


Join with color C


R27-39: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. (43)

4 & 5 – Sides (make 2)

With color A

R1: Ch 14, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. (13)
R2-13: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. (13)
Cut yarn leaving a long tail for seaming.

Join with color B

R14 – 26: Ch 1, sc across, Turn. (13)
Cut yarn leaving a long tail for seaming.

Join with color C

R27-39: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. (13)
Cut yarn leaving a long tail for seaming.

6 – Shoulder Strap

With colors C

R1: Leaving an extra-long tail (for seaming), ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. (7)
R2-163 (approx. 40″): Ch 1, sc across. Turn.
Cut yarn leaving an extra long tail for seaming strap onto outside of bag.

Assembly

To begin, with the long tail of color c, sl st the front (2) and side (4) pieces together on the outside of the bag (starting from the top of the bag down the side, making sure that the front is facing you).
As you go down the side of the bag, change colors with each long tail from each color block. ** If you are left-handed, you will sl st the front (2) and side (5) pieces together and start on the opposite side of the front piece.

Continue to sl st the bottom (1) and front (2) pieces together going across the bottom of the bag and sl st the other front (2) and side (5) pieces together using the tails from each color block. Repeat this on the other side of the bag.
Sl st the bottom and sides together with the long tail of color A from the bottom (1) piece.

Attaching the Shoulder Strap


With the long tail from each end, sl st the shoulder strap (6) onto the outside of each side piece (4 & 5) between st 3 and 10 and rows 30-39.
