The Ridgeline Cowl – A Free Crochet Pattern

The Ridgeline Cowl uses a stitch combination that has been one of my favorite stitches to use in a design so far. It’s an easy stitch to work with because it only has a one round repeat. This cowl works up quickly in a solid color or multiple colors. If you like matching sets, the Ridgeline Beanie pattern link can be found below.

NOTES:

  • Read through the entire pattern before you begin.
  • This Ridgeline Cowl is an advanced beginner pattern that is written in US terms.
  • This pattern is worked in the round, from the bottom up and turned each round using the invisible join method (described below).
  • You can use any size yarn and hook for this pattern, just note that the yardage and dimensions will be different than stated.
  • Using a stitch marker for this pattern is not essential, but it makes it a lot easier to know where to join and turn, I highly recommend it.
  • The second cowl and matching beanie shown below is made with Red Heart Comfort in the color Coast Print.
  • Due to the nature of this stitch pattern, it is important not to make the sl sts too tight. If you are a tight crocheter, I would suggest going up a hook size for a looser fit.

Dimensions:
Small: Approx. 12″ x 6″ folded in a half.
Medium: Approx. 17″ x 6″ folded in half.
Large: Approx. 21″ x 6″ folded in half.

Gauge: 7 sts and 9 rows = 2″ in pattern.

Pattern Inspiration:

I stumbled upon this stitch combination by accident, and with a little research, I found out that it was called the even moss stitch. It’s an easy combination of slip stitches and half double crochet stitches that are worked on top of each other in rows. I love the texture of this stitch because it’s thick and looks great in so many color combinations. The pattern is also reversible with the invisible join and turn technique used.

If you like this stitch pattern, be sure to check out The Ridgeline Mug Cozy, Mug Rug and Skinny Scarf patterns on the blog that also use the same stitch. To view these patterns click on the photos below. This stitch works well with so many projects!

TESTER PHOTOS

I could not have brought the Ridgeline Cowl to life without the help of my fabulous testing team! Check out their versions below.

Invisible Join and Turn:

Step 1: After completing the last st of round, remove hook from loop. Bring working yarn from back to front.
Step 2: Insert hook from back to front in first st of round.
Step 3: Pull loop through first st, keep working yarn underneath loop, place stitch marker in the same st. Turn. Place the last st of each round where the PM is.

Lets Get Started!

NOTE: To adjust the size of this pattern, start with a multiple of 2. The pattern is written for size small with medium and large in brackets. ***If you adjust the size of the pattern, the amount of yarn will be different than listed above.

R1: With CC, fsc 80 (110, 140), invisible join to first st and TURN. PM. (80, 110, 140)

R2: With MC, *hdc, sl st* repeat from * to * around. Invisible join and turn. PM. (80, 110, 140)

R3-23: Repeat R2 (or until desired height) alternating CC and MC. If you decide to make the cowl taller, increase rounds in multiples of two.

R24: *hdc, sl st* repeat from * to * around. Do not turn. (80, 110, 140)

R25: With CC, sc in each st around. Invisible Join to first st. (80, 110, 140)
