If you are interested in learning how to crochet the wave stitch, you are definitely in the right place! I love the waves this pattern creates using a variety of stitches. The waves are created using the height of each stitch.
Crochet pattern tutorials are a great way to learn a new stitch or have fun with an old one. When using different colors, the waves stitch can look complicated, but it is a quick and easy advanced beginner stitch with a two row repeat.
MATERIALS:
- any yarn and corresponding hook (I used ww (#4) yarn and H/5mm hook)
- scissors
- yarn needle
ABBREVIATIONS:
- ch – chain
- st – stitch
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
I have created a detailed step by step picture tutorial of each stitch listed above on the Learn Basic Crochet Stitches Page.
NOTES:
- This stitch tutorial uses US terms.
- There are many different variations of the wave stitch. Make sure to read the pattern directions before starting.
- To work the wave stitch in this tutorial you will need a multiple of 8 chain stitches +1.
- In this tutorial I used 3 colors of yarn, teal, red, and grey, carrying the yarn color up the sides and dropping the yarn color when not in use.
- Feel free to use any yarn with the corresponding hook to practice this stitch.

Let’s Crochet the Wave Stitch!
What is the wave stitch?
The height of each individual stitch creates the “wave” pattern.
The sc (shortest stitch) is the bottom of the “wave” and increases with the next stitches, hdc, dc, and the top of the “wave” is the tr (tallest stitch). (See photo below)
working on the other side, the pattern of stitches changes.
Make sure to work a sc (shortest stitch) on top of the tc (tallest stitch) from the previous row and work a tc on top of the sc from the previous row (see photo below).
For this tutorial, R1, I started with 25 chains (8 x 4=24) (24+1=25)
To start this wave stitch, chain a multiple of 8+1.
The wave stitch is a two row repeat. I used three colors, teal, red and grey for this tutorial.
For the first row after you chain 25(I used teal), place your first sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and continue the repeat in row 1 from * to * across (24 stitches)
R1: ch 1, *sc, hdc, dc, tr, tr, dc, hdc, sc* Turn. (See photo below)
R2: (I used red) ch 3, *tr, dc, hdc, sc, sc, hdc, dc, tr* (see photo below)
R3: Row 3 is just a repeat of row 1 using grey yarn.
You can continue repeating rows 1 and 2 and alternating colors as many times as you prefer.
What else can you make using this stitch?
This stitch would make a great dishcloth or placemat pattern for the kitchen, using ww cotton.
You can also finish this pattern off with a sc border, like the one in the Coastal Waves Coaster pattern below.
