PATTERN NOTES:

  • This is an advanced beginner pattern written in US terms.
  • This pattern is written in size small with large in brackets.
For example: Row 1: ch 27 (33) ch 27 is for size small and ch 33 is for large.
  • Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • Size small was made using Red Heart Super Saver Pooling – Berry.
  • Size large was made using Red Heart Super Saver – Neon Stripes and crocheted with the color stripes in the yarn.
  • The gauge for the large is slightly different than the small because it is crocheted according to the stripes in the yarn. If you are not using this particular yarn, this gauge is not essential.

FINISHED SIZES OF THE CLUTCH:

  • Small: 8″ x 4″
  • Large: 10.5″ x 4″

GAUGE USED:

  • Small: 13 st and 13 rows = 4″
  • Large: 13 st and 12 rows = 4″

The Griddle Stitch – used in the Colorful Clutch

The griddle stitch is one of my favorite stitches, because it has a lot of texture and is quite easy to memorize with only a 1 row repeat. It is also my favorite because it only uses sc and dc stitches, which makes it a very beginner friendly stitch.
The pattern is a repeat of alternating sc and dc stitches. Every dc is worked on top of a sc from the previous row, and every sc is worked on top of a dc from the previous row.

CLUTCH PATTERN INSPIRATION:

For this particular pattern I decided to use the griddle stitch, before I picked up any yarn. This is quite different for me, because I usually decide on yarn before the stitch. I am very visual and love selecting yarn before a stitch pattern. I had a skein of Red Heart Neon Stripes on the shelf and was instantly drawn to the bright colors, and I wondered if I could crochet with the stripes in the yarn instead of cutting colors every row. I quickly found out that I could and wanted to share this fun technique with you!

I also tried using some Red Heart Pooling yarn in the color Berry that I had left over from another project and love how this yarn worked up!

Crocheting your colorful clutch with Red Heart Neon Stripes (size large):

This was a fun yarn to work with and with a little planning, I was able to work up each row with the stripes in the yarn with no cutting or weaving in ends! If you are using Red Heart Neon Stripes, each stripe is approx. 114″ and size large is designed to crochet each row using the stripes in the yarn. Each row (except row 1) will be crocheted using the whole neon stripe in the yarn. You may have to adjust your tension to make sure all sts in the row are the color of one stripe.
NOTE: only the large size will work when crocheting with this yarn.

Follow the steps below when crocheting with the Neon Stripes yarn.

Step 1: Be sure that your starting ch (ch 33) is one color in the yarn (I used black).
Step 2: Make sure the first sc of the row is in the next color in the yarn (mine was purple).
Step 3: Make sure the last dc in the row is the SAME color as the first (also purple).
Step 4: Repeat steps 2 & 3 until you have finished row 27 or until desired length.

How to Assemble Your Colorful Clutch:

The Colorful Clutch is made in one flat piece, part of the bottom is folded toward the top and seamed. You can also crochet the sides together instead of sewing using the whip stitch.

Step 1: Measure 3.5″ from row 1 ( there is no right or wrong side. Fold and assemble as you prefer.)

Step 2: Fold 3.5″ towards the top. With new piece of yarn, sew or sc 2 sides together. NOTE: sew sides together using the whip stitch or sc down each side.

Step 3: Fold the top over and mark where the button fits through one of the holes. Sew it in place.

Button Placement:

Size LARGE: I sewed the button 15 sts across row 5 that matched up through the fourth hole form the left across the top.
Size SMALL: I sewed the button 12 sts across row 4 that matched up with the third hole from the left across the top.

  1. I have tried repeatedly to find where to download from your site (like the International Crochet Blog Hop says. I’ve also tried repeatedly to use the code COLORFULCLUTCH24. Neither work. I’m sure it’s user error but please advise how I can get this cute clutch.
