Red and Green Mini Crochet Tote Pattern - Pine Tree Crochet

Pattern Inspiration:

The wattle stitch, that is used in the Mini Crochet Tote Pattern, has been a favorite of mine since I used it in one of my very first cozy crochet sets. I designed The Autumn Crunch Hat, Cowl and Fingerless gloves in the fall of 2020. You can view each of these patterns below by clicking on each photo.

This is a very easy stitch to learn because there is only a one row repeat. This pattern is worked in the round and looks great is so many colors. With the holiday theme in mind, I chose to alternate red and green, but the bag would also look great in a solid color.

I was experimenting with some variegated yarn and white and love how it worked up because my favorite colors are pink and purple. I used Red Heart Super Saver Pooling yarn in the color Berry and paired it with white.

Lets Get Started!

A brief description of the wattle stitch:

The wattle stitch consists of a cluster of stitches (sc, ch1, dc) that are made all in the same chain space.

When making your first round of wattle stitches in this mini tote crochet pattern you will skip 1 sc from the previous row in between each cluster. When I first started designing this tote, I used a 4.5mm hook for the whole project, but I found that working the wattle stitch on top of rounds of sc creates a larger body to the bag. If you use both sized hooks, the mini tote has a nicer shape. Use a slightly larger hook for the base and handles and a slightly smaller hook for the body.

Bottom:

With 7/4.5mm hook.

R1: With MC, ch 11, sc in second ch from hook and next 8 st(s), inc in the last st of row. sc along the bottom of the ch, 9 sc. (20)

R2: sc, inc, 7 sc, inc, sc, inc, 7 sc, inc. (24)

R3: 2 sc, inc, 8 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc, 8 sc, inc. (28)

R4: 3 sc, inc, 9 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 9 sc, inc. (32)

R5: 4 sc, inc, 10 sc, inc, 4 sc, inc, 10 sc, inc. (36)

R6: 5 sc, inc, 11 sc, inc, 5 sc, inc, 11 sc, inc. (40)

R7: 6 sc, inc, 12 sc, inc, 6 sc, inc, 12 sc, inc. (44)

R11: With MC, *cluster (sc, ch 1, dc), sk 1* Repeat from * to * around (22 clusters)

R12: With CC, cluster (sc ch 1, dc) in each ch sp. (22 clusters)

R13: With MC, cluster (sc, ch 1, dc) in each ch sp. (22 clusters)

R14-26: Repeat rounds 13 and 14 ending with round 13.

NOTE: If you would like to add more rounds (making your tote taller) before working handles, repeat R 12 and 13 until desired height.

Fasten off and weave in CC.

With 7/4.5 mm hook.

R27: With MC, place 1 sc in each sc and ch sp from previous round. Sc in last dc. (45)

R33: 4 sc, sc in each ch, 11 sc, sc in each ch, 8 sc. (59)

  1. This is a really cute tote! Thank you for the pattern. I like your idea of using the tote as the wrapping for a gift. I don’t have time to make this right away because of the other WIP’s I have that need to get finished, but I bookmarked the page. I think I have enough cotton yarn in my stash to do this so that’s where I’ll start. Your testers patterns are very helpful too for for colour options.

    1. Thank you so much. I hope you enjoy the pattern when you make it! Have a great weekend!

  2. The Christmas tote is a very clever idea for holiday gifts. thanks for posting?
