Pillars & Stripes Messy Bun Hat Pattern

NOTES:

  • This pattern uses US terms.
  • I separated each color in the cake and used the 2 colors I had most of.
  • The color combinations are endless with Caron Cakes.
  • The hat is made in 2 pieces. The brim is made in one piece and the hat is crocheted onto the brim in the round.
  • ch 1 does not count as a stitch.


ABBREVIATIONS:

  • ch – chain
  • st – stitch
  • ss – slip stitch
  • scflo – single crochet through front loop only
  • sc2tog – single crochet 2 together (decrease)

MATERIALS:

  • 1 skein of Caron Cakes – Turkish Delight
  • H/5 mm crochet hook
  • darning needle
  • tape measure
  • stitch markers
  • scissors

Gauge: 14 st and 17 rows in sc = 4″

Dimensions: 24″ around and 6″ tall. The brim is 24″X 2″

THE BRIM:

Row 1: With cream color ch 9, sc (through both loops) in 2nd ch from hook and across (7)
ROW 2: Ch 1 and turn. scflo across (7)
NOTE: Carry the colors up the side, you will hide the ends when you crochet the hat in the round.


R4: With brown ch 1 and turn. scflo across (7)
R5: Ch 1 and turn. scflo across (7)
R6: With cream ch 1 and turn. scflo across (7)
R7: Ch 1 and turn. scflo across (7)
R8-77: Repeat rows 4-7 18 more times for a total of 36 color blocks.
Create a circle with the brim and ss to first st of row 1 and fasten off with a long tail and sew the ends of the brim together.
NOTE: When crocheting the hat onto the brim for ROUND 1, make sure your sc are going over top of the edge of the brim where the yarn was carried up. Also make sure the loops of yarn are on the inside of the hat when you crochet in the round.

THE HAT:

ROUND 1: With cream color ch 1 in the first st from row 1 of the brim and sc in same stitch. Place marker. 1 sc in the end of each row of brim around. (76) ss to first st (with marker)


R17: With cream color ch 1 *sc 3, sc2tog* repeat from * to * with 1 sc left (61) ss to first st.
R18: Ch 1 and sc around (61) ss to first st.
R19: Ch 1 *sc 3, sc2tog* repeat from * to * with 1 sc left. (49) ss to first st.
R20: Ch 1 and sc around (49) ss to first st.
R21: Ch 1 *sc 3, sc2tog* repeat from * to * with 4 sc left. (40) ss to first st.
R22:
Ch 1 and sc around. ss to first st.
R23:
Ch 1 *sc 2, sc2tog* repeat from * to * across. (30) ss to first st.
R24:
With brown color ch 1 *sc 1, sc2tog* repeat from * to * across. (20) ss to first st.
R25:
Ch 1 and sc across. (20) ss to first st. cut yarn and weave in end.
