The Ridgeline Sun Hat – A Free Crochet Pattern

Ridgeline Sun Hat - Crochet Pattern shown in 3 sizes.

Summer is officially here and I am so excited to wear sun hats again! The Ridgeline Sun Hat works up quickly with little yarn and is also written in three sizes. The Ridgeline Sun Hat is also my very first summer hat pattern I have designed and I couldn’t be happier with the result! I love summer accessories and a hat is definitely an essential to stay shaded from the summer sun.

ABBREVIATIONS:

  • ch – chain

  • sc – single crochet
  • sl st(s) – slip stitch(es)
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • inc – increase
  • ML – magic loop
  • PM – place marker
  • I J+T – Invisible Join and Turn

MATERIALS:

  • H/5mm hook
  • Approx. 155 – 190 yards of ww (#4) yarn
  • Small – 155 yards
  • Medium – 165 yards
  • Large – 175 yards
  • Darning needle
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors
  • Stitch marker

NOTES:

  • The Ridgeline Sun Hat is an advanced beginner pattern that is written in US terms.
  • This pattern is worked in the round, from the top down. The top is joined every round and the body is turned each round using the invisible join method (I J+T, described below).
  • Using a stitch marker for this pattern is not essential, but it makes it a lot easier to know where to join and turn.
  • Ch 1 and 2 does not count as a stitch.
  • When changing colors I dropped the non-working yarn.
  • Yarn used in photos: Red Heart Super Saver – Cool Stripe, Stash yarn #4 cotton.
  • Due to the nature of this stitch pattern, it is important not to make the sl sts too tight.

Sizes:

Small – Fits head circumference of 19″-20″
Medium – Fits head circumference of 21″-22″
Large – Fits head circumference of 23″-24″

Brim is approx 1.5″ with an option to make it wider.

Gauge: 7 sts and 9 rows = 2″ in pattern.
Rounds 1-7 = Approx. 6″ in diameter.

Pattern Inspiration:

I like the moss stitch, because it’s a classic stitch. I absolutely love the even moss stitch, because it’s a one row repeat and the texture is beautiful. This is my 11th design using the even moss stitch and it definitely will not be my last. I started designing with this stitch last fall (2022) and I love how versatile it is. My first pattern using this stitch was the Ridgeline Pumpkin. It is a quick little pattern that uses very little yarn and is an easy way to decorate for the Fall. TESTER PHOTOS

Behind every designer there is a testing team of amazing crocheters, and I could not have brought this pattern to life without the help of my fabulous testing team! I hope you find some color inspiration from their beautiful hats.
