Meet the Maker – Designer Spotlight

Meet Peggy - Designer behind Twisted Crochet

Welcome to the August edition of Meet the Maker – Designer Spotlight! This month I am excited to introduce Peggy, crochet designer behind Twisted Crochet. I got to know Peggy as a maker on Instagram, I love meeting new makers and Peggy’s designs are beautiful! I have also tested a few of her patterns, more on that below!

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

Hi! I’m Peggy, the designer and maker behind Twisted Crochet. I’ve been crocheting since the dawn of time, nearly 50 years but only within the last 5 or 6 years, decided to turn my life long hobby into a business. By day I run my own credit card security & compliance consulting business and teach yoga. I love to travel and wander whenever I can. I’m happily married to the love of my life, Rick, and between us we have six adult children and seven grandchildren.

How long have you been crocheting?

Since I was 7. My grandma taught me the basics. When I was 20 I taught myself how to read patterns because I wanted to make my first baby a baby blanket. I still have that blanket!

What types of patterns do you design?

I love to design beginner friendly and easy to make crochet patterns. Fall and winter beanies are my specialty but I also have cowl, scarf, and sweater patterns.

Is there anything in particular that inspires your designs?

Color, nature, and texture! The more texture, the better!

What is the main reason that you crochet?

I crochet to think, meditate, keep my hands busy, and burn off the crazy 😉

How did you decide on your maker name?

I made a list of words that described my two passions, yoga and crochet. Twisted is the one word that applies to both. In yoga, there are postures that involve spinal twists and in crochet, yarn is twisted. So Twisted Crochet was born!

Do you have a favorite pattern you designed and why?

My Twisted Alpine Beanie and matching cowl are my favorite designs. Not only is the design a crowd favorite at craft markets, but it’s also easy to make, massively profitable, and it oozes texture! To view the patterns, click on the names below.

What do you love most about being a crochet designer/maker?

I absolutely love seeing what other makers do with my patterns!

What do you love least about being a crochet designer/maker?

I still grumble that it takes loads longer to write and publish a pattern than it does to make the item.

Is there any helpful advice you could give someone just learning to crochet?

Practice, practice, practice! Practice new stitches by swatching and pay attention to your gauge!

When you are not crocheting, what are you most likely doing?

You’ll find me teaching yoga or going on an adventure!

What is your favorite type/weight of yarn to work with and why?

In the fall and winter I love to work with bulky 5 and an 8.0mm hook. Spring and summer it’s a DK 3 or worsted 4 and either a 4.0 or 5.0 mm hook.

Do you have a favorite place to crochet?

I have a nice little corner on the couch!

Do you have any upcoming designs or new plans in the future as a maker?

I have at least 3 beanie patterns and one poncho pattern that I’ll be releasing very soon!

If you could create with any other medium (other than yarn), what would it be?

I love to paint! Mostly abstract stuff so I can play and experiment with color. It still surprises me when someone asks if they can buy one of my paintings.
